Personal Concerns--how necessary are they?

This is a FAQ that I have not yet added to the FAQ page at the website and it comes up all the time.  When we talk about personal concerns what we are really talking about is how to create the best, most tangible link between yourself, the ritual work you are doing, and your target.  I have seen spells work where there were NO personal concerns to go with, and I have seen spells fail where the worker had every piece of biological material you could possibly want--but those are the exceptions NOT the rules.  

Generally speaking, the more of a connection you have to your target, the more likely your ritual work will be to succeed.  And the strongest connections are provided by biological material--hair, nails, saliva, sexual fluid, skin, etc.  Note: most professional workers will not work with clients' sexual fluids--I know that I don't--but I am always happy to provide magical coaching to clients who have obtained this excellent link to a target and wish to work with it.  A common, common question is--what if I don't have any personal concerns?  I always encourage folks in this situation to try to get personal concerns because there is no substitute for them.  With that said, Hoodoo is a form of folk magic and as folk magicians we do work when and where it needs to happen.  That means that if your boyfriend just walked out and you don't have any of his hair it shouldn't stop you from setting a reconciliation vigil light or doing a return to me type ritual.  At the same time, you should be scrounging to see what personal concerns are around that you may be able to keep for future use.  The most frustrating cases for workers and clients alike are those where the client has the expectation that all you need is magic and that even if you have no link to the target the magic can and should work--this stems from a fundamental lack of understanding about what magic really is and how it really works and also just plain, old fashioned impatience.  If given a choice between a bunch of awesome conjure oils and a single strand of my target's hair, I am going to go with the hair each and every time.  I cannot drive home hard enough how important this is, and I want client's to be educated about why some workers (like me) tend to harp on the subject.  Afterall, if I am going to do ritual work for you I want you to get the biggest bang for your buck and while nothing can guarantee that, the right personal concerns can help a lot!

Quick news update:  AIRR which is a committee of Missionary Independent Spiritual Church (where I sit on the board and am a Bishop) is not just a directory of ethical readers and workers.  We also provide pro-bono services for those in need.  A new page on the wiki describes how the AIRR pro bono services work and how you may benefit from them.  Likewise, many of y'all ask me what you can do to leave a thanks offering when magic and readings help things go your way--one lovely way to acknowledge the gracious gifts of God is to donate some money or supplies to the pro-bono fund so that others in need may also find solace and benefit from spiritual aid.

 

Slight delay on email readings and how do I know when ritual work begins?

I have been a bit under the weather and running around for various appointments over the last few days so there has been a slight delay in email readings.  If you are waiting for an email reading and wondering...where is it?! now you know.  I hope to finish up the few remaining in my inbox today or tomorrow.  Also, a common question that I get is...how do I know if you have started my ritual work?  Once I have started ritual work for a client they receive a confirmation email that is full of helpful links, the top FAQ's concerning ritual work, as well as information about how much contact they can expect from me during the course of our work.  If you haven't received the confirmation email then I haven't started your work.  What are some of the reasons that starting work might be delayed?  If I am sick, busy, or otherwise engaged, if I have not received your personal concerns, if the lunar phases are problematic or if there is astrological weirdness going on--in any of these cases I may delay ritual work.

 

Blah-strology

I have had several clients email me wondering about this new astrological sign that is all in vogue right now and also wondering what it means for them and their case work.  Rather than repeat myself I am sharing a link to The Wild Hunt blog that has an excellent write up on the supposed 13th sign of the zodiac and why you shouldn't worry about it unless you are working with a worker or astrologer who practices sidereal astrology in which case you probably already know it.

What's Happening at AIRR

As some of y'all know, among the many hats I wear is the cap that says "writer and tech team member for AIRR."  If you don't know what or who AIRR is, go check it out asap!  You can see my personal page here.  For those (most of you I hope!) who do know what AIRR is, what you may or may not know is that AIRR is much more than just a website and group devoted to fostering ethical and honest rootworkers.  We are also a wikipedia type site that is chock full of information on all kinds of different things--from various types of spiritual readings, to descriptions of the various conditions we concern ourselves with in Hoodoo, to stories about the lives of Saints, Holy Figures, Gods and Goddesses that some AIRR rootworkers work with and honor.  There is a lot of information out on the web, but the information we provide at AIRR is really top notch--partly because we work as a team so we are able to help one another out and catch what might elude us if we were just doing work by ourselves.  So the next time you want to know about why some rootworkers petition Sri Ganesh to open the road, or who the various Orishas are, head over to AIRR and see what you can find!

Thanks to everyone who has written their kind words, thoughts, and prayers for our family during this time.  We will be healing from this sadness for a long time yet, but I appreciate all of the support we have received over the past few days.  I am also happy to report that I am more or less caught up with the backlog of work that has been sitting in the office.  There are a few email readings left to get out which I can hopefully get done today.

Delay on Email Readings and Rootwork rituals

Hi everyone,

Early today a dear friend of our family was killed in an automobile accident.  I am going to be out of the office this evening and tomorrow morning and I will be "on call" for my family members during this time which means that there will be a delay in all work.  I apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate prayers for our family.

What will happen when Baby arrives?

Hi everyone,

I have received several panicked emails from clients who are worried that they will no longer have access to me once the baby arrives, so I am reposting here what I wrote in the December Milagro Roots Newsletter so y'all can all know what the plan is and I will keep this post featured at the top of the blog for the next few weeks!

Our baby continues to do well and thrive as his little kicks get stronger and stronger! We are now officially in the third trimester and believe it or not, have less than 11 6 weeks to go!  Thanks as always for your continued prayers and blessings, our family truly appreciates them. Along these lines, a few of you have started asking what my plans for maternity leave are.  I believe that it is vitally important for mom and baby to spend as much time together as possible in the weeks following birth, and I am also blessed to not only work from my home but to be surrounded with family members, conjure work colleagues, and assistants.  Therefore, I am happy to report that Milagro Roots will remain open!  Folks can continue to order our superior products, I will be taking readings but my schedule for the months of February and March will be limited and organized on a first come, first serve basis.  I will also continue to perform custom ritual work for clients.  I am truly thankful to all of the support that my husband and I have which allows our lives to continue running smoothly during this exciting transition--you know who you are--may you be blessed!
